I think I will make Spiderman for the cake I have due next Friday. I want to make it early so that it have time to set, plus if there is a problem I have time to redo it.
For this cake I will also be using royal icing to make the spider webs, which is another project this weekend.
The cake it's self will be strawberry and filled with a whipped cream. Then, I will put a layer of chocolate ganache over the outside of the cake before I cover with fondant.
My strawberry cake recipe is extremely sweet, I use a lighter filling and icing to help balance the flavor. The whipped cream filling can make the cake a little unstable, which is why I am putting the layer of chocolate ganache. The ganache will harden when set in the refrigerator, which adds extra stability. So, with the ganache and dowel rods the cake buildings will stand up great. I hope.
If for some reason this doesn't work I will make a sheet cake and make the building out of rice crispy treats.
