Scraps

Today I am using all my leftover supplies from the Spiderman cake to make a tall teacup cake. I want to use the supplies so that they don't got to waste. I hate wasting things and I always have an extra layer or two of cake after I bake them. I usually just freeze and save them for an emergency. However, they will get frost bitten if you leave them in to long. I try to use them within a month. If you have a deep freezer they may last longer than that.

I don't tend to use the frozen leftovers in a customer cake. I have a time or two if it was from a cake the week before and something went wrong in the decorating process and I don't have time to bake more.

I also use my extra cake to make cake pops. I am still learning how to make a good cake pop. I think it will just take some practice, but I will get it.

Spiderman is done.

The Spiderman cake is done. It was a lot of work. I had to do a lot of things I had never tried before. I think it turned out great. What to you think?

Royal Icing

I have spent today remaking Spiderman for the third time and the third time was the charm. I am completely happy with it now. Well, I am having issues with one arm, but I will work that out when I put the cake together.

I also spent a lot of time working with royal icing, and let me say, it is a pain in the butt to work with. I am hoping the webs I made will hold up. If not I will spend tomorrow or Friday morning remaking them out of fondant or gum paste. I may make some tonight just to be on the safe side. I hate waiting to the last minute and something isn't working.

I do think that royal icing would be great for somethings, I just have to get use to working with it. I will keep trying.

Swiss Meringue

I have spent the day making Swiss Meringue. It is absolutely delicious, however, it takes forever to make. It takes about 2 hours to make one batch. The cooling process takes about 45 minutes to an hour and the recipe says it will only take 10 minutes. You also have to double boil the eggs longer then it says to.  But it is one of the best frostings I have found. It is a compliment to just about any cake.

Webs

To do the webs tonight or not, that is the question? I can't decide if I have the energy to do the webs tonight or to wait until tomorrow. Tomorrow I have a busy day of Swiss Meringue making to help a friend out. I can probably do both tomorrow. I just don't want to put too much on my plate for one day.

Baked

Cakes are baked and let me tell you this new recipe for strawberry cake rocks! It is so much better than a cake with jello in it! It is a must keep.

Spiderman baking day.

Today I will be baking the cakes for the spiderman cake. I can't wait to get it started.

Spiderman

I think I will make Spiderman for the cake I have due next Friday. I want to make it early so that it have time to set, plus if there is a problem I have time to redo it.

For this cake I will also be using royal icing to make the spider webs, which is another project this weekend.

The cake it's self will be strawberry and filled with a whipped cream. Then, I will put a layer of chocolate ganache over the outside of the cake before I cover with fondant.

My strawberry cake recipe is extremely sweet, I use a lighter filling and icing to help balance the flavor. The whipped cream filling can make the cake a little unstable, which is why I am putting the layer of chocolate ganache. The ganache will harden when set in the refrigerator, which adds extra stability. So, with the ganache and dowel rods the cake buildings will stand up great. I hope.

If for some reason this doesn't work I will make a sheet cake and make the building out of rice crispy treats.

Like Christmas

So, I was talking about ordering a bunch of cake supplies, well today most of them came in. I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I got sick this afternoon, however that did not stop me from unpacking all four boxes that came in the mail.

I got all kind of goodies. I got a body mold set for making people. I have been making them by hand which is quiet a bit of work. So, I can't wait to try it out. I will be using it for making Spiderman for next week's cake. I also got a bead mold, a fondant roller attachment for my mixer, stuff to make royal icing, and Isomalt. I have been wanting to try using both royal icing and Isomalt. I will be using the royal icing on next weeks cake as well to make spider webs.

I will also be making a large amount of Swiss Meringue next week for a friend. A friend of mine does cakes as well and she has a huge cake to do for a wedding and I am just helping her out a bit. She always helps me out, so I what to return the favor.

Even though the first two weeks have been a bit slow, next week will be very busy. So, I will be posting a lot of photos.

Chocolate Cake.

Today I am going to bake an 8" chocolate cake. I am trying new recipe, since I still haven't found just the right recipe for a chocolate cake. I am still undecided as to how I will decorate said chocolate cake, but I'm sure that will come to me.

Now it's off to clean my kitchen before starting. I will let you know how it comes out.

Idle time

While I am on the meed and waiting to be well enough to bake a cake I am spending my time researching. I am getting cake ideas and learn new techniques, so, when I am well I will be able to hit the ground running. I SO can not wait!!! Maybe I will even have some followers by the time I get started.

I am getting all my supplies and tools organized and ready for me. So next week I will have two cakes to do since I couldn't do one this week. If you ever have any ideas or something you want me to try let me know.

Oh, while I'm thinking about, I am looking for a good chocolate cake recipe. All the ones I seem to fine are either dry or very dense. I have found two more to try, however, if you know of one please let me know.

Week 1 is a bust

Week one is not going the way I had planned. I have been sick this week and my car broke down. So, needless to say I have not been able to bake at all this week. ;(. I was so excited to get started on my year of baking. I guess this just means that I will have to do two items next week. I do have a spiderman cake I will be doing in two weeks.

On another note, I will be posting pictures of my progress and my finished products each week. I will hopefully get start backing next week. I can't wait to get started.

There is a cake class in London I would love to take, however it is expensive and I would have to fly there 3 weeks in a row. I think the class will have to wait until next year. I will just be happy learning on my own and improving my craft.

The ball is rolling

Yesterday I ordered Battered & Baked business cards and a few other things. I am very excited to finally start doing cakes as a business. They say you should always have a job doing something that you enjoy and are passionate about. I think I have that covered with cakes. I had that cover when I was doing hair as well, however, I can't really do hair her in germany. I love being in a position to be able to do the things I love. I am a very blessed lady!!!

Pricey

I have spent the day ordering some supplies to make decorating cakes easier. I found that if you want more than the basic stuff it is expensive. There are a few things I have been wanting for a while so I decided to buy them today and spent $230 on just a few things. I can not believe how much companies charge for this things, it's not like they have computers in them. I mean I know there are some things that are expensive and rightfully so, however, a small silicone mold priced at $55 is ridiculous. I guess it's a good thing I am going to charge for my cakes for now own.
